Yup. Too many people don't know their world history and it is terrifying.

I can't find the article now, but NYT interviewed around a dozen people maybe a week ago asking what they look forward to with Trump's presidency. One guy said it'll be wonderful, like the Roaring '20s -- without a sense of irony I think. O.o;;

I am seriously frightened. We still have time to change course, but already I feel we won't. Hitler on his own is a nobody. With all his supporters -- either willing or not -- he had crazy amounts of power. Will there be enough moderate Republicans to keep "checks and balances"?

I heard on the news this week that half of the Germans don't know that the Nazis killed 6 million Jews and 12% haven't heard about the Holocaust. Wot??? What DID they do in school?

That is terrifying - but not surprising in some ways - I never took any classes that covered either WWI or WWII. All of our Social Studies classes in elementary school focused on Canadian (mostly French-Canadian, since I was taking French Immersion and all our books came from Quebec, LOL) and Native Indian history.

We studied the Romans in high school in Grade 8 a bit, but never made it to modern-day history unless you specifically took History in Grade 11 and/or Grade 12 - which was entirely optional, as opposed to Social Studies in Grades 8-10. I would have liked to have taken it, but didn't have room - I was doing Physics/Chemistry/Biology - the closest thing that I was able to squeeze in, was "Western Civilization" in Grade 11 - which again, started with the Romans and moved forward - but never got to "modern" times.

So anything that I've learned about the Nazis was occasional remarks by my grandparents or mom - my great-great-uncle was put in a concentration camp when he was 4 or 5 - he never spoke about it though.

I don't know the timelines - his family, including my great-grandmother (his sister), moved to Canada from Germany - but I'm not sure when that was, because I'm pretty sure my grandmother was born in Canada, at that was in 1924. My grandfather fought in WWII, he was pretty young - I'm not sure how long he was overseas though. My mom was born in 1947 though, and she is the second kid - I don't know how much older her sister is - not too much older though - a year or two at max, I think.

But yeah - there are a LOT of people who only know about the Nazis and the Holocaust from movies and tv and not from actually *learning* about it, in school, I think. Which, doesn't bode well...

The main problem I'm having is that it IS on the curriculum in Germany. I don't know how you can finish school and NOT know about it. It was our ancestors, damn ... we've got to know this!!!

I studied the rise of Nazism at school, then did two more history papers [courses] in it in my first year at university. I did not expect in my lifetime to see this shit happening again.
