47)Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh
48)Imager by L.E. Modesitt Jr (L)

I like Mr Modesitt's books - but I do find that in some ways, the main character is always the same person - young, naive about the politics around him, butting his head against authority - but always very politely and not meaning to give offense. He finds that he has some sort of ability, and learns to use it a bit by himself, and then ends up in a training course of some type, where his teachers are cryptic and speak in riddles, while he wonders why they cannot just *tell* him what he's supposed to do. Sometimes he saves the world, ends up killing bad guys and either not being able to take credit or it being too dangerous for him to be known, and usually people try to kill him, but while he gets injured, he kills all the assassins. Oh, and he usually has a girlfriend, but is awkward with relationships and the woman drives the relationship and determines if it exists or not.

The worldbuilding is always very complex, lots of political maneuvering and I do keep buying them, but they do sort of become all the same...

43)Deader Still, by Anton Strout (swap)
44)Embrace the Darkness by Alexandra Ivy (swap)
45)The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins (L)
46)The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan (L)

Embrace the Darkness is the second in a series - I liked it much better than the first. The characters were less annoying and more fleshed out. Not sure yet if I'll keep this book - there's a queue of people who will be willing to take it off my hands on paperbackswap.com so if I need credits I can easily swap this one out like I did the last.

The Hunger Games is one that I've heard a lot about - it's a YA book but it's really good! Post-apocalyptic future where North America is divided into Districts, ruled by the "Capitol". Every year a boy and a girl are selected to compete in the Hunger Games - a survivor-type game where contestants must kill or be killed and the sole survivor earns fame and glory.

40) When Darkness Comes, by Alexandra Ivy (paperback swap)
41) Dead to Me, by Anton Strout (paperback swap)
42) Marked, by PC Cast and Kristin Cast

Nocturne is the last published novel in Elaine Bergstrom's vampire series. I bought the other ones years and years ago, and enjoyed them immensely. This one came out a few years later, and somehow I missed it - and it's been difficult to locate.

Currently reading the next Anton Strout novel.

I feel like I missed a few books here, but if so, they were library books and they've been returned. Oooo..it would be cool if the library kept a transaction history that you could go through to see what books you've borrowed over time...I'm sure they *have* one, but I can't access it from my account.

Vampires, shape-shifters and shadowy government agencies - not a single demon in the story though...sometimes I think authors are running out of book titles.

32)Morning Light by Catherine Anderson (L)
33)Sunrise Alley, by Catherine Asaro (L)

I really enjoy Catherine Asaro's books - this one is a new series in a new world. And, it just fell flat - the writing was fine, the story was kind of meh in a predictable way, and I really didn't find any of the characters terribly likeable. I found the relationship between the two main characters to be unbelievable and forced - it just didn't read true.

I have the second book in the series, Alpha, that I got via paperbackswap.com (very cool program if you live in the US and have books you are willing to part with). I'll read Alpha - it's only tangentially related to this book, although it's in the same series, so hopefully it will be better.

20) Ender in Exile by Orson Scott Card (L)

I've read most of the Ender series a long time ago, and this is a new "mid-quel" that just came out in hardcover - I got it through the library. Ender's series is one that I enjoy, although I am of two minds in terms of reading this author's books, as the author is a voluble critic of equal rights for gays and his opinions are offensive to me :(

19) Secrets of a Proper Lady by Victoria Alexander (L) - this turned out to be a re-read - romance novel I picked up at the library. Nice light read.

Made the mistake last night of opening up the Vorkosigan omnibus and starting A Civil Campaign at 11pm - turned the last page over and look at the clock - 3:50am. .

18) Undone by Rachel Caine

A new series in the Weather Warden universe - I like the author's writing, and the book moves quickly, with interesting characters and a nice alternate view of the real world without going into the future or too far off of "reality".

3 books on the go now...still finishing up the short story anthology, half finished a paperback romance from the library, and finished Komarr in the omnibus, but haven't begun A Civil Campaign.

14) Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon (Libary hardcover)

Seriously disturbing - to the point where the Author's foreword warns the reader that the first half of the book involves graphic descriptions of abuse and torture. Compelling read, though I was glad that the book (weighing in at a hefty 728 pages in hardcover) was split into 2 parts - I finished the first part at 2am and it was a natural place to stop - otherwise I would have ended up gulping down the whole thing in one sitting. Note to self - don't start 700 page novels at 11pm at night...

next up - a collection of short stories called "Wolfsbane and Mistletoe" that I picked up at the library.

12)Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin (library)

This book was reviewed by [livejournal.com profile] lightgetsin and sounded so interesting, that I requested it from the local library. Very interesting book about how animal brains work - from the point of view of an autistic person. It actually made me feel like I was back in school, and how much I miss *learning* new things - I will have to make a point of sprinkling in some nonfiction books - my brain is obviously turning to mush with all the lowbrow fiction I've been reading :)

13) Dance with the Devil by Sherrilyn Kenyon (library)

Speaking of trashy novels...number 92 in the unending series of Dark-Hunters - true to form, we have the tormented powerful male, the physically small and vulnerable female who Teaches Him to Love, and in the background (the most interesting part of the story) is Acheron, a mysteriously powerful being with a demon as his familiar. I also have the latest novel in the series, which will be the next book read - which promises to be *Acherons* story - hooray!.

10) Princeps Fury, Jim Butcher

This is a series that I keep forgetting how much I like, which is too bad. I also think I may have skipped a book or two, and I don't remember which books I own and which I've read from the library. This is the downside of the library for me - I get to read *hardcovers* and then I'm confused when the paperback comes out, as to whether I have it or not.

Anyway - this is the latest, and it's a fantasy series with lots of travelling across vast distances, finding out that there are other civilizations on the planet, and big battles. Well-written, with an unlikely hero, who finds intelligent solutions to problems where everyone else seems to assume that violence or fighting are the only options.

11) Pride, Rachel Vincent

3rd book in a series - Faythe is a werecat, who has been in trouble since book 1. Werecats come in 2 flavours - born ones like Faythe, and strays, who are humans that have been scratched or bitten by a werecat in cat form. Most humans die if they are infected, but a few live through the infection and come out as werecats. In this novel, Faythe is on trial for infecting (accidentally) and later killing (in self-defense) her human ex-boyfriend. Female werecats (tabbies) are incredibly rare, but Faythe's father is the leader of the North American Pride and politics make it possible that Faythe will be executed for the crimes of infecting a human, and murder.

Good series - Faythe can be annoying - she's a spoiled brat in a lot of ways, but generally seems to be growing up a bit over the course of the series. My chief complaint is that other interesting characters are brought in, we're given slices of characterization to make them intriguing, and then they're killed off, or wander off never to be seen again.

7)Fire Me Up by Katie MacAlister (Library)

In the Aisling Grey, Guardian series - this series is familiar to me, I'm pretty sure I've read the first book in the series. Aisling is a Guardian, someone who has supernatural powers, and somewhere along the line, Drake, the wyvern of the Green Dragons, has decided that she is his foreordained mate. Aisling has some strong opinions on the topic. Light, peppy, and a quick read - the kind that make me wish you could request paperbacks from the library, because I would like to read the rest, but not enough to buy them new :)

8) Living with the Dead by Kelley Armstrong (Libary)

New book from Kelley Armstrong, in her Otherworld series. This one focuses on Hope Adams, a half-human, half chaos-demon, and her boyfriend Karl, a werewolf, and their efforts to help Hope's childhood friend, who is involved in the murder of a socialite. Ghosts, the supernatural Mob, and lots of action - will buy this when it comes out in paperback, as I do all of Kelley's books.

9) Silver Master, by Jayne Castle (Library)

Pretty sure I've read another book in this universe - standard romance novel, with alien artifacts, psychic powers and a mystery. Worthwhile fluffy read. Will pick up more by this author if I see any at the library.

6)Snake Agent by Liz Williams

A detective story set in Singapore Three, in the future. Lots of Chinese mythology, interesting characters and good writing. However, even though the inside cover says this is the first of 4 books in the series, I felt like I'd been thrown into the middle - lots of references to things that happened in the past. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was done enough that I felt like I had missed a whole book.

I bought this and the second in the series used, so I will read the second one before deciding whether to continue on and purchase the 3rd and 4th.

5) Ecstasy by Jacqueline Frank

A new series in the same world as the previous books by this author. The concept is that there are other races that live in the world, aside from humans - there are Demons, Vampires, Shifters and Shadowdwellers. The first books were about the Demons, this book starts looking at Shadowdwellers. 'dwellers are beings who live in complete darkness - light hurts them. They are aware of various planes of reality - Realscape, where humans live, Lightscape where they cannot go, and Shadowscape, where it is always dark. They cannot just live in Shadowscape, however, because after only a couple of days they succumb to a sickness call 'the euphoria'.

Interesting concepts - I like the idea that dwellers can "shadow skip" - if they are standing in shadow, they can "skip" across a room to another shadow as long as the shadows are connected. Of course, the main character is *so* powerful that he can skip to any shadow he sees, even if they are not connected.

This is part of what I dislike about these types of books - the author comes up with a perfectly interesting concept - gives it some rules, that make sense in the context of the world - and then immediately makes her lead character super awesome and *above* all the rules.

It seems like once the rules are in place, the author is then stuck - "oh noes, how will my hero defeat the villain if they both have to play by the same rules!"

4) Stay the Night - Lynn Viehl

Book number umpty billion in a series. More vampire-like-immortal beings - mostly males. More super-awesome-secretly-with-super-powers human women who become "bonded" to a male, get pissed off about it, realize they really do love this arrogant, heavy-handed pushy male and give up their entire existence to be with him. Nothing new here, just fluff and entertainment. There's a handful of these series that I tend to get mixed together - these Darkyn ones, Jacqueline Frank's books, and JR Ward's Black Dagger brotherhood - although the writing styles and voices are all very different.
